How to make delicious flavoured iced coffees and lattes at home with MONIN syrups
You’ve secured your flavoured syrup from your local supermarket or Amazon, now you need to find out how to create the most delicious iced coffees at home? Read on for MONIN’s complete guide, whether you use cold brew, instant coffee, pods, French press or a bean-to-cup machine.
First, the basic recipes – if you were to order a flavoured latte in a coffee shop:
Classic flavoured latte recipe:
Double espresso
240ml steamed milk of choice (or heated then frothed)
Method: Extract the coffee into a mug or glass of choice, then add the syrup. To a milk frothing jug, add the milk and steam until hot and silky. Add into the mug to combine together.
Note: If you don’t have a steaming wand, you can heat the milk separately in a microwave, then froth the milk. If you don’t have a frother, you can simply use hot milk, but this will have a different texture to a traditional latte (but will still taste delicious!).
Classic flavoured iced latte recipe:
Double espresso
120ml cold milk
Glass full of ice
Method:
To a tall glass, add the milk and syrup and stir to combine. Then fill almost to the top with ice cubes and finish with the espresso.
Now, if you don’t have a coffee machine at home, that’s fine – it’s so easy to adapt the coffee element of the recipe depending on your equipment.
Instant coffee
Add two teaspoons of instant coffee granules or powder to your glass and top with 30ml (two tablespoons) of hot water. Stir to combine, then use in the above recipes. If you like your coffee less strong (often coffee shops will use a single shot of espresso in iced coffees as the recipe uses half the amount of milk).
French press
Add your ground coffee beans (approx 1 heaped tablespoon per 200ml hot water, but adjust to your taste) to your French press, then top with freshly boiled water and give it a quick stir. Insert the plunger into the pot, but leave it extended so it rests just above the water level. Wait around 3-4 minutes, then plunge to remove the coffee beans from the water. Then use around 60ml of the strained coffee to make your espresso.
Note: for iced coffees you ideally want all of your ingredients to be as cold as possible, so it’s best to prepare your French press coffee in advance and place it in the fridge.
Coffee pods
Simply place the pod into your machine and press the double shot option. If you want less strong coffee, simply use one shot, or use half the amount depending on your taste preferences for your iced coffee at home.
Bean-to-cup: Prepare your espresso as usual, grinding your beans, and extracting two shots on your machine.
Cold brew
You can make your own cold brew at home by placing coarsely ground coffee beans and room temperature water, then leaving to steep for 12-24 hours (depending on desired strength) and straining with coffee filters or a clean kitchen strainer/cheesecloth.
You can make this in batch with a ratio of one part coffee to 8 parts water. Or, discover MONIN Cold Brew concentrate and skip a step – simply add 30ml of Cold Brew concentrate per shot of espresso – this is best for iced coffee applications.
ICED COFFEE TOP TIPS
- If you’re using hot espresso to make your iced coffees, put the milk, syrup and ice in the glass first, then finish with the hot coffee – this will prevent the ice from melting too quickly
- If making iced coffees for a group, cold brew coffee is the best method to use as it allows you to create the coffee in batch (or MONIN Cold Brew concentrate)
- Iced coffee is usually too cold to melt sugar, so it’s best to use a syrup to sweeten your coffee. Choose from a flavour like Caramel, Hazelnut or Vanilla, or use Pure Cane Sugar to simply add sweetness to your iced coffee at home.
How much syrup should I add?
It is entirely up to you how much syrup you add - whether you add a quick dash, or measure it out, or use a pump. Our pumps are different sizes depending on the size of bottle you have - we recommend starting with 1 pump and adding another if it needs it. If you have a 250ml bottle of syrup the pump may only dispense a very small amount of syrup, so you might need to add 5-10 depending on the sweetness. If you're using a teaspoon to add the syrup, we would recommend 2-4, but it's always better to start lower and add more if it needs it!
